Best of American lit

I think those class helped me in so many different ways. Not from the actual curriculum. But how we got there. With open source learning. This class was geared for today's technology and society Instead of 20 years ago. We collaborated, we learned how to create and use a network. And most importantly. We had fun doing it. I made a twitter for the class during the beginning of the year. And it turned out to be one of my most favorite apps. I have almost 2k tweets. Also I liked how we could analyze a book written 50 years ago about "the amazing future" just society back them and tie it into today's culture in a way we could all understand it.it was a really fun year and ill take the things I learned from it and use it for pretty much the rest of my life.

Johnny mnemonic

This story was so confusing. But it fakes place in a future ruled by drugs and prosthetic mutations? Haha Johnny has a data file in his head that other people want so he goes to the "lo tek's" which in a way are a symbol for cyberpunk in a way and gets salvation with them. That's all I understood from this book.

Literary analysis

Temple of the winds,By Terry Goodkind is the fourth book in the sword of truth  series. In Temple of the winds a great plague is released into the world by Emperor Jagang. Richard reads that somewhere long ago there was a temple where a cure was held by magic for the plague but was sealed off and lost forever because there were objects of great power in the temple. Richard and Kahlan search for the lost temple going through old books and legends. As the plague spreads and more people die by the day. A group of people come to Aydindril saying the only way into the temple is through the hall of the betrayer. A great ritual is preformed ontop a mountain. During the ritual Kahlan has to marry Drefan Richards half brother. And Richard has to marry Nadine, a girl from his old home in Westland. After the ritual each new couple has to have sex with their spouse to seal the marriage. But in the dark the couples are swapped so that Richard is once again with Kahlan and Drefan is with Nadine. In the dark room Kahlan doesn't realize that instead of Drefan it is now Richard. As they seal their marriage Kahlan starts to enjoy Herself and when it is all over she tells Richard (who she still believes is Drefan) to not tell Richard about it. Once in the light she realizes that she has actually slept with Richard. Richard is outraged and betrayed at the thought that Kahlan thought she was sleeping with Drefan and enjoying it. Ontop the mountain the hall of the betrayer appears from the clouds and Richard enters and stops the plague but stays in the hall for a couple of days. Outraged that Kahlan betrays him. Finally he leaves the temple of the winds and goes back to Aydindril to find his half brother Drefan trying to kill Kahlan. He kills Drefan and saves Kahlan.

Characterization:

Richard: Richard is a stoic character for the majority of this story till the very end. But it brings in a new aspect of Richard never seen in the other books, pure anger, outraged and betrayed by his love Kahlan.

Kahlan: during this story Kahlan is somewhat bi polar. She is torn between the dismantlement of the old midlands and her right to rule D'Hara with Richard as the mother confessor.

Saving people whenever he can from the plage and shedding some light on the temple of the winds. At the end of the book you find out Drefan wanted to take Richards position as the D'Haran ruler and take Kahlan as his own.

Literary analysis

Okay so this post is from a while ago except that the school server didn't let me post toy blog and I forgot all about it until I went thorough my notes on my iPad so here it it. Literary analysis of the stone of tears by terry goodkind.

Stone of tears

In the stone of tears by terry goodkind, Richard and Kahlan return to the mud people after killing darken rahl. Richard finds out at darken rahl was actually his father. During their stay Richard starts getting extremely bad headaches. One night three women come to them saying that the headaches are a form of magic within Richard, because he has the gift of magic. The three sisters tell him that the headaches will soon kill him unless he goes with them to a far away land and wears a special collar called a Rada'Han which will stop the headaches. Richard refuses the first offer and one of the sisters kills herself. The other sister warns that Richard will only get two more offers and after that he will die. Richard and Kahlan live their lives like nothing has happened even though the headaches continue. Weeks later the two sister return and once again Richard denies and the sister kills herself. Finally on the last visit of the remaining sister, Kahlan forces Richard to take the collar and go with the sister.

After a long journey they make it to a massive city where the sisters of the light are to train young wizards. Richard goes through his training with the sisters and finds that there are followers of the keeper hidden within the sisters of the. Light . Richard with the help of the prelate, Sister Verna and warren. Try to thwart the sisters of the dark. During his training Richard realizes he is the first war wizard to be born In thousands of years and has great power of both subtractive and addictive magic. At the end of the book Richard is released and kills a sister of the dark as the other 6 sisters run away. Richard quickly rushes to Aydidndril to save Kahlan to find out that she was executed publicly by a great wizards. Richard goes to a graveyard and weeps for his lost love. And prays that the good spirits watch over here. Suddenly the spirit of Deanna (the Mord sith who tortured Richard in the first book) takes Richard to a place between worlds and lets him talk to Kahlan. Richard finds out that Kahlan is still alive and that Zed used a massive death spell making everyone believe that the mother confessor was executed.

The theme of this novel would be to never give up and try for what you want. Richard never gave up on his love for Kahlan when he was taken to the palace of the prophets. Which gave him the drive to get away from the sisters of the light and get back to the midlands.

Characterization:

Richard is a very strong very smart man. If his fighting skills can't get him out of a sticky situation, his words and manipulative ways can.

Sister verna starts out as more or less the 'bad guy' in this story but along the journey and the training at the palace Richard and Verna become very close friends.

Thoughts of today's essay

I think that after being on break for 10 days my brain wasn't working yet. And my entire essay was pretty much just a bunch of crap and rambling. I think I did well at not making any sense whatsoever on the essay topic. I believe by Wednesday I should be back in the game and my mind in the right spot and in gear to write an essay.

Modernist Author Project: Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21 1899. Hemingway was a Journalist and an Author. He was inspired by modernist authors. Hemingway served as an ambulance driver during WW1 where he was injured and sent home, he also was present as a journalist during the Spanish Civil War and also a few battles in WW2. Some of his hobbies were Hunting and also Fishing. Ernest had a dark side though, he was a raging alcoholic and attempted to commit suicide multiple times.

Hemingway was considered on of the best and most respected authors during the modernist era. He was known for having a short yet discriptive writing style. He tried to use the least amount of words as possible and never described anything completly, leaving it up to the readers imagination. Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Some of his most famous pieces of literature are; the Old Man and the Sea, for Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms and also  many more short stories. Hemingway was present during the Spanish Civil War, which inspired him to write For Whom the Bell Tolls. And also the landing at Normandy during WW2 where he was a Journalist.

Ernest was an ambulance driver during Word War One. He wanted to be front line but was unable due to a bad medical history. Hemingway was injured during the war and was left in pain for the rest of his life. It is said that because of this chronic pain he started drinking. Which led to his alcohol abuse.

During a child it is said that his mother would dress him up as a girl in a dress and force him to play with tea sets and dolls instead of other male toys because she wanted a girl instead of a boy. This could be the reason why Hemingway thought he had to prove his manly-ness to everyone by hunting or drinking. Ernest had many hobbies but his main were hunting and fishing. Hemingway went on Safari's in africa and hunted big game. As well as "small" hunting parties in wooded areas. It is recorded that in a single weekend hunting trip Ernest shot and killed over 300 rabbits as well as 30 deer. The exact numbers are not specific. Ernest Hemingway was married four times. And was often with many other women during the marriges. He was known to be a womanizer and tried to get with as many women as possible and brag about it to other people. Which fules the idea that Hemingway didnt think he was very manly and had to prove himself to other people.

Hemingway had a bad medical history when he was younger often getting sick. After his injury he started drinking regularly. Hemingway was in two different plane crashed and survived both of them. Which left him in pain and practically bedridden for the rest of his life. Ernest would drink from the time he woke up till he went to bed. Ofthen four to five bottles a day. Hemingway also suffered from depression which is thought to have inherited from his father who commited suicide. Hemingway tried many different therapy's to try to help himself. Ernest tried to commit suicude multiple times. He tried to run through an airplane propellor while boarding an airplane on a trip but was held back and restrained till onboard. Once the plane he reached altitude Hemingway tried to jump out of the plane without a parachute. You can say that if he wanted to go out he wanted to go out in a big way. On July 2, 1961 Ernest Hemingway shot himself in the head with a shotgun.

His legacy still lives to this day. Some of the most iconic comercials in the world are modeld after Ernest Hemingway. If you know the line "he is.. the most intersting man in the world" then you have atleast heard the legacy of Ernest Hemingway. Dos Equis comercial. Kind of ironic because he was a very intersting man, and he loved to drink, so he fits very well as the Dos Equis man.

Ernest Hemingway lived a great life and won many awards for his books. He traveled the world, had many friends, and went hunting and fishing regularly. He served in one war and was present in two others as a journalist. He had some problems, but thats what made him so likeable. He changed the way of writing forever and led the way for Modernism. I'm glad that I picked.. The most intresting man in the world.

Joe College

I think that todays talk was more or less a waste of time. I have already spent a great deal of time looking at colleges and have narrowed it down to a few select colleges. Cal poly, San Jose state, University of Texas, and some place in florida sponsorded by the navy. I would like to get my degree in aerospace engineering and then go through either Navy or Airforce ROTC officer training. Then become a pilot in whichever branch i end up choosing. I foresee many challenges and opportunitues to reach my goal. One is just how incredibly hard it is an complete the courses and get an Aerospace engineering degree. I have some advantages i know a lot of people  who are higher up in the education system to put in letters of reccomendation for me.

I am Ernest Hemingway

I am a raging alcoholic who drinks multiple bottles a day
I am suicidal but in most cases. fail.
I am an avid hunter and try to prove my manhood to everyone.
I am considered a great author
I am dead. (couldnt think/find anything else :/ )

MAP: introduction Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was a raging alcoholic drinnking two or three bottles of liquor a day. Shots for breakfast and wine and champeign for dinner. Hemingway was also a very active hunter, it is said that in one hunting trip he shot around 400 rabbits. Also till he was of age four, Hemingway's mother dressed him up as a girl and encouraged him to play with dolls and tea cups. Hemingway ultimatly ended his own life with a selfinflicted bullet to the head, but before he did that he had several other suicide attempts. Which include attemting to walk into an airplane propellor, and once airborn, he tried to jump out of the plane without a parachute but was restrained by other passengers.

Essay post game analysis

I think I did alright in this essay, I had to revise a lot of it and im happy with the way it came out. If I were to make it better I would make it a little bit longer and maybe add more content from the beginning and middle of the novel instead of just the required ending. I had a few references to other parts of the novel but not as much as I would of liked. Also I would have added the part about the monk who self immolation for his beliefs. And how that ties into the story. I believe I deserve a B+ to an A.  :)

Literary analysis 1

In wizards first rule by Terry Goodkind. Richard, a common woods guide stumbles upon a woman being chased by a group of men. Kahlan and Richard battle the men and kill them. Later in the book Richard is named the seeker of truth by his friend and now known wizard Zed. Richard Kahlan and Zed travel to a far away land to find an evil dictator who is trying to rule the world.  At the end if their travels Richard kills the evil lord Darken Rahl. Once Rahl is killed, Richard learns that rahl is his father. I think the tone of this story is an upbeat adventurist mood.

Characterization :
Richard: throughout the story Richard grows from being a woods guide too a leader and warrior.
Using the sword of truth and the magic that comes with it. Richard is unbeatable and ferocious, nicknamed the bringer of death by enemy soldiers.

Kahlan amnell: Kahlan grows a lot from the beginning of this story, she is a confessor. Which is the highest form of magic in the world. Kahlan soon starts to fall in love with Richard. But hides her power from him in fear that he will be afraid of her power.

Lit circle group

So today me and Nick went to the orcutt library and ready for an hour. Cameron couldnt make it. But we got a lot of good stuff from our conversation.
here are just some of the topics that were brought up that connect to this book
1. inception. Yes that confusing movie that makes you think and ask the quesiton; Is he dead, or alive? in inception the whole point in the movie is too implant a false memory into the mind of someone else. a Basic idea or question. to make that person question things. Now back to the book. Clarisse implanted a fundamental basic question into Montags mind. Why? That one question, changes montag. With that one question he Starts to wonder and think for himself. Which in this book in these times, are not something you want to do. But one thing me and Nick absolutly loved, was a quote on page 58. it says "Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but every everyone made equal."

The peeved pedestrian

This is definitellay a hard question. If bradbury wrote this book now. I would say he wrote this book because it's a possible future. The ideas in this book tie so well into our society, that i am speechless as to how the heck he knew all this was going to happen 50 years before it happened!? Like truely it doesnt say things plain and right out, but if you take the book one page at a time and then stop and think what somethings mean. It seriously just sounds like hes talking of the future in 15 years tops. Now, ill admit, i do not like this book. But i do really really do like the theme's and ideas that this book has in it. Me and Nick P. had a reading group and the orcutt library. It took us a complete hour to get from page 54, to page 70. And not because we are bad readers buecause thats not true. But because every page and a haf, to every two pages. We'd stop and reflect on it. This book truely is amazing. But why he wrote this book? i havent a clue. hopefully you (Dr. Preston) will enlighten us on why he wrote this.

I'm not a poet and Nick knows it! :P

So the title of this post is a little defferent from what my teacher orriginally intended, but i like this one much, MUCH better. Todays assignement was to write one single poem. As i sat for 20 minutes I had literally 3 sentences. Poetry is NOT my thing. Hopefully at the end of this i will be able to write a poem :) well see in a couple of days.

Theme for English 3

Am i the person my teachers think i am outside of school? Well, last year i would say no. I let my grades slip and other things get in the way oh my schooling. This semester, hopefully i can say yes, I would say i am a very smart and knowledgeable person. With some talents that not only teacher, but also most of my fellow students did not know. Like my passion for music, i have loved music since i started playing the drums when i was only 5 years old. yeah do the math 5, 17 now. wow 12 years of drumming. yeah only a handfull of other students know this and not a single teacher. Now back to english 3 and away from me personally. Can i be myself while i persue knowledge and find my place in this world? Sometimes heck yeah. other times.. Definitily not. I am a very talkative person (when im not being shy) and in my classes talking a lot would be bad for my understanding of the lesson. Other times i can definitly be myself as i enjoy said class and teachings, giving my perverbial two cents into the conversation and lesson. Any one has talents, some might not be as cool as others but everyone has their own talents to bring to a classroom and enrich the learning experience. People keep many things privet, I know i have my secrets. But what would socializing and making friends be without secrets to keep and to tell. And if i told you what i kept privet, well then it would'nt be privet anymore would it? And it is most definitily possible for someone to take ownership of his/her learning experience. Some will shy away and slack. Others will shine and stand out. But thats life, if you want something, get out there and get it! If not you will just be a small fish in a huge pond. Make the most of what you have. :)

Spring Post 1. Music as Literature

Can we consider music to be literature? I say this is a definite yes. How do we define literature? Literature is writing or words that people read or hear that can evoke an emotion.  What is the difference between a novel, a poem, a rap, a song, an opera, and a symphony?  Their name. They all tell a story. They all use intricate syntax and dictation that could have many differnt meanings to many different people. The songs or writing might sound different or look different, but if you take away the syanza's or the way the song is sung and look just at it as words on paper, most songs will tell its own little short story. Which to me sounds like literature.

Lost, By the band avenged sevenfold.

Centuries pass and still the same. War in our blood, some things never change Fighting for land and personal gain Better your life, justify our pain The end is knocking, the end is knocking
We've all been lost for most of this life (Lost for most of this life) Everywhere we turn more hatred surrounds us And I know that most of us just ain’t right (Most of us just ain’t right) Following the wrong steps, being led by pride
How many lives will we take? How many hearts destined to break? Nowhere to run, can't escape Full of ourselves, tied to our fate The end is knocking, the end is knocking
We've all been lost for most of this life (Lost for most of this life) Everywhere we turn more hatred surrounds us And I know that most of us just ain’t right (Most of us just ain’t right) Following the wrong steps, being led by pride
With peace of mind so hard to find We're dwelling on the drastic signs Another way to numb our mind And as you close your eyes tonight and pray for a better life You’ll see it flying helplessly away

To me, this song talks about how human existance has always had blood on its hands either in war. Or just hatred through the streets and this song just really hits home to me because i can connect to it. I think this song has very strong meaning and should definitly be considered literature.

also..

Critical acclaim by Avenged Sevenfold

Shhh be quiet, you might piss somebody off
Like me motherf***r, you've been at it for too long
While you feed off others insecurities
You stand in front of me and bite the hand that feeds

Self-righteousness is wearing thin
(Lies inside your head your bestfriend)
Heart bleeds but not for fellow men
(Broken glass, your fake reflection)

I've had enough it's time for something real
Don't respect the words you're speaking
Gone too far, acclaim

So how does it feel to know that someones kid in the heart of america
Has blood on their hands, fighting to defend your rights
So you can maintain the lifestyle that insults this family's existance
Well, where I'm from we have a special salute we aim high in the air
Towards all those pompous assholes who spend their days pointing fingers

F**k you!

Shh be quiet, you might piss somebody off
Like the heartbeat of this country when antagonized too long
I'll be damned if you count me in as part of your generous hypocrisy
Collecting enemies

Tabloid gossip queen worthless man
(There's no need for us to bury you)
Selfish agenda once again
(Right this way, you've dug your own grave)

I've had enough it's time for something real
Don't respect the words you're speaking
Gone too far, acclaim

All the way from the east to the west
We've got this high society looking down on this very foundation
Constantly reminding us that our actions are the cause of all their problems
Pointing the fingers in every direction
Blaming their own nation for who wins elections
They've never contributed a f**king thing to the country they love to criticize

Excuse the obscene, ignore the untrue
Depictions we see, try and get through
Admitting mistakes can hurt
I'm not the last but I sure ain't the first

Shh be quiet, you might piss somebody off

(Self-righteousness is wearing thin)
Lies inside your head your bestfriend
(Heart bleeds but not for fellow man)
Broken glass, your fake reflection

I've had enough it's time for something real
I don't respect these words you speak
Gone too far, acclaim

Okay so this song was written when Bush was president wich might help under stand it. But this song talks about how people criticize the government for being in the war with Iraq and criticise the Bush administration. Yet the marines and people out there are defending the very rights that the people are using against them. and its kinda like a "Hey why don't you stop criticisng us because we're giving you freedom."
