Modernist Author Project: Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21 1899. Hemingway was a Journalist and an Author. He was inspired by modernist authors. Hemingway served as an ambulance driver during WW1 where he was injured and sent home, he also was present as a journalist during the Spanish Civil War and also a few battles in WW2. Some of his hobbies were Hunting and also Fishing. Ernest had a dark side though, he was a raging alcoholic and attempted to commit suicide multiple times.

Hemingway was considered on of the best and most respected authors during the modernist era. He was known for having a short yet discriptive writing style. He tried to use the least amount of words as possible and never described anything completly, leaving it up to the readers imagination. Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Some of his most famous pieces of literature are; the Old Man and the Sea, for Whom the Bell Tolls, A Farewell to Arms and also  many more short stories. Hemingway was present during the Spanish Civil War, which inspired him to write For Whom the Bell Tolls. And also the landing at Normandy during WW2 where he was a Journalist.

Ernest was an ambulance driver during Word War One. He wanted to be front line but was unable due to a bad medical history. Hemingway was injured during the war and was left in pain for the rest of his life. It is said that because of this chronic pain he started drinking. Which led to his alcohol abuse.

During a child it is said that his mother would dress him up as a girl in a dress and force him to play with tea sets and dolls instead of other male toys because she wanted a girl instead of a boy. This could be the reason why Hemingway thought he had to prove his manly-ness to everyone by hunting or drinking. Ernest had many hobbies but his main were hunting and fishing. Hemingway went on Safari's in africa and hunted big game. As well as "small" hunting parties in wooded areas. It is recorded that in a single weekend hunting trip Ernest shot and killed over 300 rabbits as well as 30 deer. The exact numbers are not specific. Ernest Hemingway was married four times. And was often with many other women during the marriges. He was known to be a womanizer and tried to get with as many women as possible and brag about it to other people. Which fules the idea that Hemingway didnt think he was very manly and had to prove himself to other people.

Hemingway had a bad medical history when he was younger often getting sick. After his injury he started drinking regularly. Hemingway was in two different plane crashed and survived both of them. Which left him in pain and practically bedridden for the rest of his life. Ernest would drink from the time he woke up till he went to bed. Ofthen four to five bottles a day. Hemingway also suffered from depression which is thought to have inherited from his father who commited suicide. Hemingway tried many different therapy's to try to help himself. Ernest tried to commit suicude multiple times. He tried to run through an airplane propellor while boarding an airplane on a trip but was held back and restrained till onboard. Once the plane he reached altitude Hemingway tried to jump out of the plane without a parachute. You can say that if he wanted to go out he wanted to go out in a big way. On July 2, 1961 Ernest Hemingway shot himself in the head with a shotgun.

His legacy still lives to this day. Some of the most iconic comercials in the world are modeld after Ernest Hemingway. If you know the line "he is.. the most intersting man in the world" then you have atleast heard the legacy of Ernest Hemingway. Dos Equis comercial. Kind of ironic because he was a very intersting man, and he loved to drink, so he fits very well as the Dos Equis man.

Ernest Hemingway lived a great life and won many awards for his books. He traveled the world, had many friends, and went hunting and fishing regularly. He served in one war and was present in two others as a journalist. He had some problems, but thats what made him so likeable. He changed the way of writing forever and led the way for Modernism. I'm glad that I picked.. The most intresting man in the world.

Joe College

I think that todays talk was more or less a waste of time. I have already spent a great deal of time looking at colleges and have narrowed it down to a few select colleges. Cal poly, San Jose state, University of Texas, and some place in florida sponsorded by the navy. I would like to get my degree in aerospace engineering and then go through either Navy or Airforce ROTC officer training. Then become a pilot in whichever branch i end up choosing. I foresee many challenges and opportunitues to reach my goal. One is just how incredibly hard it is an complete the courses and get an Aerospace engineering degree. I have some advantages i know a lot of people  who are higher up in the education system to put in letters of reccomendation for me.

I am Ernest Hemingway

I am a raging alcoholic who drinks multiple bottles a day
I am suicidal but in most cases. fail.
I am an avid hunter and try to prove my manhood to everyone.
I am considered a great author
I am dead. (couldnt think/find anything else :/ )
